When choosing her books of the year Penelope Lively recommended the South and West Somerset volume in The Guardian Review 28th November 2014:
"My roots are in West Somerset, so the new Somerset: South and West edition of Pevsner’s Buildings of England (Yale) is warmly welcome. The old one, by Pevsner alone, was somewhat skimpy; Julian Orbach’s revisit is huge, reflecting the architectural riches of the area, and there is wealth within – informative and scholarly text, handsome photographs."
Timothy Mowl finished his review of the Wiltshire volume in Country Life 7 July 2021 with 'Mr Orbach's Wiltshire combines Pevsnerian scholarship with a sure eye, a keen Betjemanian sense of place and a warm heart for the architectural heritage of his adopted county'.
